AELWYD Exhibition - Craft in the Bay
18 January - 1 March 2020
AELWYD, the exhibition that was at Ruthin Craft Centre last year has traveled down the A470 to Cardiff Bay.
Aelwyd, the title of this exhibition, is Welsh for hearth – a word synonymous with home. Through their material, making, story or use, the objects in this exhibition explore a deep-rooted sense of belonging and home.
Fifteen makers, all from or living in Wales, create handmade items that are a pleasure to live with. Unique vessels by Deiniol Williams incorporate stones and silt collected from the Welsh landscape – so that a little piece of home becomes a defining part of each vessel. Llio James continues the tradition of Welsh textile design by making handwoven carthenni that are refreshingly contemporary. Household items, polished by many hands over the years, become treasured heirlooms and are documented for posterity in Sophie Schärer’s prints. And wheel-thrown
tableware by James and Tilla Waters are made to be used and enjoyed as part of our daily routine.
In exploring the affinity we feel towards handmade objects, Aelwyd invites you to follow one possible path towards a contemporary Welsh interior.
Exhibiting Artists: Claire Cawte, Sarah Christensen, Mandy Coates, Ann Catrin Evans, Rosie Farey, Helen Flynn, Astrid de Groot, Simon Hulbert, Llio James, Sophie Schärer, Mick Sheridan, James and Tilla Waters, Neil Wilkin, Denial Williams and Yusuke Yamamoto.
